Things to know

The Miyazaki Shrine Grand Festival which will be held from October 25th to October 27th (2019) in Miyazaki city, Miyazaki prefecture, is the biggest local festival in the prefecture. With a rich history of over 140 years, portable shrines called Gohoren are paraded through the city in glorious fashion in order to pray for plentiful harvests, and also to honor Japan's legendary first emperor Jimmu. With Japanese drums delivering the rhythm, shishimai (lion dances) that dance along and religious worshipers dressed in traditional religious dress parading through the streets, this exciting and unique event will give you a glimpse into Japanese folklore and traditions.
