Description

The Yonezawa Uesugi Festival is a festival that honors Uesugi Kenshin, who was responsible for laying the foundations of Yonezawa. The festival period at the end of April coincides with the season when cherry blossoms are in full bloom. You can take leisurely strolls in the park while enjoying beautiful views of the cherry blossoms as well as the many stores that have been set up along the park.
The highlight of this festival is a re-enactment of a famous series of battles that is regarded as the greatest showdown in the history of the Sengoku era (1467-1590); the “battles of Kawanakajima” between the Uesugi and Takeda forces. This re-enactment brings to life many impressive scenes, such as the firing of matchlock; the famous scene where Uesugi Kenshin charges into the Takeda camp alone; as well as the frenetic battle scene where both forces mobilize their entire troops, resulting in a violent clash of around 700 warriors in total. There is no doubt that witnessing these scenes from history will bring you back in time to the intense atmosphere of the Sengoku era.
