Things to know

Carried out in Fukui Prefecture from October through early November, the Takefu Chrysanthemum Doll Festival is a unique Japanese celebration that can’t be found anywhere else. The chrysanthemum is the national flower of Japan, and this festival displays over 20,000 of the plants for visitors to enjoy. The flowers are arranged into various shapes and styles in a range of colors. The most noteworthy of the designs is perhaps the dolls; chrysanthemum blossoms are woven into wooden frames to form clothing for the dolls. There are a number of other displays and gardens at the festival as well, and the event lasts for a whole month, so make sure not to miss it.
