Things to know

Nagasaki Kunchi is a festival held at Suwa Shrine in Nagasaki, and has a rich history going back over 380 years. The festival incorporates Chinese and Dutch cultures, which have played significant roles in the city’s history as a port town. Traditional folk dances with a long flexible figure of a dragon using poles positioned beneath the figure are just one of the aspects to this exciting multi-cultural festival. Perhaps the most remarkable may be the parade pulling a boat shaped float weighing 5 tons! This three day festival is full of folk dancing, parades with giant floats and portable shrines that are energetically carried and thrown up into the air for celebration!
