Things to know

Ainokura Gassho Zukuri Village is famously known for its gassho-zukiru houses that are pocketed throughout a lush mountain scenery. There are a total of 23 houses making this a calm and peaceful mountain village. These houses have been standing since the Edo era and the village has been selected as a World Heritage site. There are different light ups throughout the year, each with a special theme that pertains to the season at the time. This is a great chance for visitors to get a nighttime view of a traditional Japanese village along with a special lighting ceremony with a magical touch to it. Some of the themes displayed throughout the year include, lingering snow, night cooling, and water reflection. In addition to the lighting ceremony, there are different elements besides themes. In September they have a live folk song performance and in November visitors can participate in setting up snow barriers.
