Things to know

The Kamihinokinai Paper Balloon Festival is a tradition that takes place every winter in the Kamihinokinai district of Nishiki, in Akita prefecture. Taking place on February 10th every year from 6:00-8:30pm. Participants get to write their wishes on paper balloons, which will be displayed as designs on many of the balloons. Participants who arrive by 5:00pm can write their wishes on balloons for free. Similar to hot-air balloons, these balloons are floated up into the night sky with heated air inside of them. The paper balloons are so large they measure as long as 8 meters, with about 100 of these balloons being launched during the event each year. Many of these balloons feature special designs such as geisha or samurai which is a nice tribute to traditional woodblock prints.
