Things to know
200 boats leave the Oshima Port for the “Miare Festival,” a 700 year old tradition in Fukuoka prefecture, Kyushu. This ritual occurs annually and invites the goddess of Oshima to the Munakata Taisha shrine to participate to pray for good luck and fortune and safety at sea for fishermen and other seamen. There are two leading boats carrying the goddesses, starting from Oshima and ending in Konominato Port in Munakata City. From Oshima to the Konominato Port in Munakata City there is a 15 km parade of boats. This festival has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage. |
