Things to know

The Nihonmatsu Lantern Festival is known as one of the top lantern festivals in Japan, and it has taken place every autumn for over 350 years. This festival boasts seven floats, each representing a different area of the town. The floats are decorated with around 300 lanterns each, lit from the inside with candles. Over the course of three days, these floats are pulled through the streets of the town, accompanied by performers and traditional live music. This festival was originally started to encourage religious belief, and even today the celebrations begin at the Nihonmatsu Shrine, where the red paper lanterns are lit using a bonfire. If you’re in Fukushima during autumn, make sure not to miss out on this spectacle.
