A spring tradition at Rikugien Garden, the shidare-zakura (weeping cherry tree) and daimyo teien park light-ups are held in the park each year. Rikugien Garden is one of Japan's daimyo teien parks, and the shidare-zakura here bloom earlier than the more common Yoshino cherry; the best time to see the blossoms is late March. The shidare-zakura is a symbol of the park, standing at about 15 meters tall with a branch spread of about 20 meters. Either shining in the midday spring sunshine or standing out against the night sky, both views are spectacular. During the light-up period, park hours are extended to 9:00 p.m. (last admission to the park is at 8:30 p.m.), so don't miss the chance to experience the fantastical nighttime at Rikugien Garden. In addition, the cafes on the premises, Sakura Chaya, Shinsentei, and Fukiageno Chaya, have extended hours during the event and stay open until 8:00 p.m. (last order is at 7:30 p.m.). After spending some time gazing at the cherry blossoms, why not relax with a set of tea and Japanese sweets. On top of that, during the event there are guide services offered every day at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. that last about one hour each. (Guide location: in front of the service center or in front of the shop that sells amulets at the Somei-mon gates. Participation is free; service is suspended in the event of rain.) The guide services are only offered in Japanese, but anyone who is interested shouldn't hesitate to give it a try. *Light-up times: from sunset until 9:00 p.m. *After 4:30 p.m. admission is restricted in some places due to safety reasons, so some places in the park cannot be accessed.
