The Nihonichi-no-Imonikai Festival in Yamagata Prefecture is the largest imoni festival in Japan. Imoni is a stew made of taro and meat, a traditional dish from the Tohoku region that is particularly popular in autumn. At this festival, a giant iron cauldron 6.5 meters across is used to cook imoni stew for the thousands of festival-goers. The stew is made using local ingredients, including around three tons of taro, 1.2 tons of beef, and 700 liters of soy sauce. The stew is dished out on a first-come, first-serve basis, so if you want the full experience of this local specialty, make sure to arrive early.
