Things to know

The Tsuchiura All Japan Fireworks Competition in Ibaraki Prefecture is said to be the oldest running fireworks competition in Japan. It was started by a Buddhist priest in 1925 as a measure against the economic recession at the time as well as to commemorate fallen soldiers and express thanks for the harvest. Even to this day, the competition and its prestigious awards, some of which are sponsored by the national government, have served as incentives for pyrotechnicians in Japan to perfect their craft. There are three sections in the competition―star mines, size 10 shells, and original displays―and the winner of each section is presented with an award. The competition itself is a huge spectacle, made possible by the support of thousands of volunteers in addition to public funds.
