Description

The Warabi Naked Festival is one of Japan's intriguing hadaka matsuri (naked festivals). It is held in Yotsukaido City, Chiba Prefecture and involves lightly clad men fighting in the mud of a rice field in the cold of late winter. Highlights of the festival include the human-horse cavalry battle and carrying children through the mud as a method of exorcism. This joyful and chaotic festival has religious roots, being celebrated to pray for a good harvest. Even if you just visit as a spectator, be prepared for the possibility of getting muddy.
