Things to know

The Inner Shrine of Ise Jingu is considered the most sacred Shinto shrine in Japan because it is devoted to the imperial goddess Amaterasu Omikami. A large torii gate at the entrance marks the shrine's area as sacred and it is common to purify yourself with water when entering. The area leading up to the shrine is called Oharaimachi and is filled with traditional Japanese shops and restaurants. Ise Jingu Shrine also has an Outer Shrine that is located north of the Inner Shrine which is less well known.
