Naiku of Ise Jingu is considered the most sacred jinja (shinto-shrine) in Japan because it is devoted to the imperial deity Amaterasu Omikami. A large torii gate at the entrance marks Naiku's area as sacred and it is common to purify yourself with water when entering. The area leading up to Naiku is called Oharaimachi and is filled with traditional Japanese shops and restaurants. Ise Jingu also has Geku that is located north of Naiku which is less well known.
