The Iwaki City Coal & Fossil Museum explains the history of coal mining, fossils, and the geological history of the earth. Most of the exhibits are about the Joban coal field and its history. This coal field spans a large area in Fukushima and Ibaraki that was mined since the late Edo period (1600-1867). The museum also features fossils of dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals. If you are interested in geology, natural history, or local industrial history, make sure to stop by at the museum.
