Things to know

Kasuga Taisha Shrine is a UNESCO world heritage site, as well as one of the most important Shinto shrines in Nara prefecture. It has an extensive history going back about 1300 years, and several centuries worth of assorted architectural history. Well known for its plethora of different lanterns, both stone and bronze, you will have a chance to see them lit on the Mandoro festival days, on the Setsubun day (February 3rd) and during August 14th to 15th. It is free to explore the outer sections of the shrine, but there is a small charge for those looking to explore the main sanctuary. The Kasuga Taisha Shrine is an excellent place for visitors who love shrines, but is especially recommended on the Mandoro festival days, when the shrine is bathed in the light of the lanterns.
