Kitano Tenmangu Shrine is a major Shinto shrine in Kyoto. It has a history of more than 1000 years. Like other Tenmangu shrines throughout Japan, it is dedicated to the deity of learning and scholarship, Sugawara no Michizane, who was a historical person before becoming an object of worship and admiration. Today, many Japanese people pray to him for academic success, especially before important exams. Kitano Tenmangu Shrine is well-known as a top spot for viewing plum blossoms in early spring. It is also the site of a regular arts and crafts and flee markets.
