With functional waterwheels and historical architecture abound, Magomejuku, a historical post town in Gifu prefecture is a sight to behold. A town that was once a "shukuba machi" post town on the Nakasendo trail, it has been restored as an open air historic Edo-period (1600-1867) town. With plenty of tea houses and local craftsmen, it is easy to get into the spirit of Edo Japan. Not all houses, however, are open to the public. It is important to keep in mind that Magomejuku is a functioning town and, unless a historical building is a shop or otherwise marked, it should not be entered.
