Things to know

Matsumaejo Castle faces the sea on the southern tip of Hokkaido and used to protect the island against foreign ships in the nineteenth century. It was designated as a national treasure in 1941. It survived through the turbulence and wars of the modern period, only to be burned down in a fire in 1949. The current castle tower was rebuilt in 1961 and the existing Honmaru Gate is designated as an important cultural property. The park in front of the castle is famous for cherry blossoming viewing. The castle is also known as Fukuyamajo Castle.
