概要

Mitokusan Sanbutsuji Temple is an ancient Buddhist temple in the mountains of Tottori Prefecture that is known as a site for spiritual practice. It is most famous for its nageirido hall, a wooden temple building built in the mouth of a rock cliff. The building is an architectural treasure whose exact origins are not known, though there are legends involving the mysterious powers of a mountain ascetic. The Sanbutsuji temple is spread across Mt. Mitoku and if you want to explore all of its many historical and spiritual treasures, you will need to be prepared to hike the mountain. It is recommended that you travel in pairs or groups and in fact, staff at the entrance may check whether your shoes are suitable for climbing. Because the terrain is rocky and steep at times, sneakers or sandals are not considered suitable, though traditional straw sandals as used by mountain ascetics are accepted. Anyone who takes on the challenge to climb the mountain will be rewarded with some stunning views of ancient Buddhist structures and natural scenery. Those who want to go even deeper can participate in spiritual training at the temple and stay overnight (participating in shukubo).
