Things to know

With several ways to ascend the slope, the active volcano Mt. Chokai is a great place to explore. At 2,236m, it is the highest mountain of Japan's Tohoku region and appears all the more impressive because it is free-standing and not surrounded by other mountains. It stretches across the border of Yamagata and Akita prefectures. Locals proudly call it the Dewa Fuji, the Akita Fuji or the Shonai Fuji with reference to Japan's tallest and most famous mountain, Mt. Fuji. Mt. Chokai offers unparalleled variety: with beautiful hiking in the warmer months and backcountry skiing in the winter, it’s a great destination year-round. Mt. Chokai’s beautiful Chokai Lake is often used as a turning point for more casual hikers, since reaching the peak can be challenging. You can find a small restaurant and bathroom here, making it a great rest stop!
