The Takayama Jinya building in Gifu prefecture is a rare example of a surviving Edo-period (1600-1867) government building. The area was controlled by the Tokugawa clan in 1692 and the jinya building functioned as a local office for Edo officials when they came in the Gifu area. The buildings then continued to be used as government building until 1969, when it was officially recognized to be one of Japan’s many National Historical Sites. For travelers visiting Takayama Jinya, the excellent preservation effort that has been put into the buildings will definitely make the trip memorable.
