Things to know

The Niigata Saitou Villa was constructed by a famous wealthy merchant in Niigata called Kijuro Saito IV (1864~1941) in 1941. This Cultural Heritage site literally speaks the prosperity of the old days in the Taisho period of the harbor town and commercial capital of Niigata, with its nice stroll around the garden that uses sandy geographical features and brilliantly built spacious buildings with modern Japanese architecture.  The villa is also famous for being the first nationally designated place of scenic beauty in Niigata city as a cultural facility under the name of Old Saito’s Villa Garden.  The “go round” style garden lets you take a winding walk all around the garden. The highlight of this spot is the openly built residence building made for looking into the garden and the spacious garden itself where you can enjoy the nature of the 4 seasons.  The site is built with a preference for “teioku ichinyo” (庭屋一如), which means the exquisite harmony between the garden and building, a coming together and connection between the two as one thing. Make sure to check the garden out from each room in the building! There is a large living room on both the first and second floor, and the garden has been devised in a way that you get a different scenery from each one.  Also, the waterfall at the back of the garden gives off a lovely sound that rings through the house for that ultimate relaxation space environment.    The villa is usually only open during the day, however during the autumn leaves period, the villa’s opening time is extended so you can enjoy the scenery at night too.※When the garden is lit up at night, you cannot walk around the park.
