Things to know

Tsugaru Dam, located in southwestern Aomori, is the biggest dam in the prefecture. It is also sometimes called Tsugaru Shirakami-ko, and it is known as the entrance to UNESCO World Heritage Site Shirakami-Sanchi. In the vicinity of the dam is an approximately 400-year-old giant beech tree, "Mother Tree," as well as one of the largest virgin beech forests in the world, the picturesque scenery of the Anmon no Taki Waterfall, and plenty of other spots where visitors can fully enjoy the beauty of nature.
With an advance reservation, visitors can participate in a tour of the dam guided by a staff member and an observation of the inner embankment. We also recommend the Nishimeya Dam Lake Tour, on which participants will take a ride on an amphibious bus and actually go in the water of the dam lake for the tour. Depending on the time period, events such as nighttime illumination of the inside embankment of the dam are held, so make sure to check the event schedule on the official website.

*Reservations for the dam observation tours must be completed at least two weeks before the desired tour day.
*Reservations for the Nishimeya Dam Lake Tour must be completed at least four days before the desired tour day.
