1Akita Furusato Village
Akita Furusato-mura is a leisure facility for children as well as adults. In "Starry Sky Exploration Center Spacia," the largest planetarium in Tohoku, you can enjoy spectacular images spread out over a spherical screen. You can also play to your heart's delight at "Wonder Castle," which is full of trick art and playground equipment, as well as try your hand at making traditional crafts at "Handmade Studio." Additionally, there is a selection of facilities such as "Crafts Exhibition Hall," which has a collection of craftworks from Akita, and the Akita Museum of Modern Art so that you can spend an entire fulfilling day here.
2Oyasukyo Daifunto Gorge
Oyasukyo Daifunto of Akita prefecture is a gorge cutting through the forested landscape. After a short walk, to reach the river's source, visitors will be stunned by the thermal activity mere feet away from them. Drawing from hot underground water, large masses of steam can be seen escaping from the hot rapids. Surrounded by high cliff faces, there are few places in the world with this kind of thermal activity going on. Not far away from Oyasukyo Daifunto, there are hot springs (onsen) where you will be able to bathe in steaming hot spring water for yourself. A great location for visitors looking for something different, on their walking trail.
3Yokote Masuda Manga Museum
The Yokote Masuda Manga Museum is located in Akita prefecture’s Yokote city and is the first true manga-themed art museum in Japan, containing over 220,000 one-of-a-kind artworks from 179 manga artists. It’s not all artwork displays, though; in the establishment there is also the “famous-quote road,” where the walls are lined with well-known quotes from manga in speech bubbles, as well as an area where you can learn about the history of manga, providing something to enjoy for both kids and adults. Additionally, if you find a piece in the exhibition of original artwork that piques your interest, you can read the manga in the museum’s library. There are also limited-time exhibitions and workshops, so be sure to check the official website before you visit.
4Hinomaru Jozo Sake Brewery
The Hinomaru Jozo Sake Brewery is a historical brewery that was established in 1689 in Masuda-machi, Akita prefecture. Designated as National Tangible Cultural Properties, the houses that line the streets of Masuda-machi are equipped with luxurious internal despositories; as a result, Masuda-machi is often called "Kura no machi," or "Cellar Town." Hinomaru Jozo Sake Brewery itself is also endowed with one of these profound historical depostiories.
