Sendaijo Castle, the symbol of Sendai city, was constructed by famous daimyo Masamune Date, leader of the Date clan in 1601. The castle is also known as Aoba Castle or “Aobajo” in Japanese, as the castle is located on Mt. Aoba, a small mountain in the city. Over its 400 years of existence, the castle has endured anti-feudal resistance during the Meiji period, a huge fire in 1882 and carpet bomb attacks in 1945. Now all that remains are the outer stone walls and a guard tower. At the Aobajo Museum located at the site of the original main keep of the castle, you can see a CG reconstruction of the original castle. Be sure to try local sweet delicacy Zunda Mochi while you are in the area too! © 2016 Sendai Tourism, Convention and International Association
2Osaki Hachimangu Shrine
Osaki Hachimangu Shrine built by Date Masamune is famous for it’s typical “Date” culture design built with fully lacquered parts and golden ornaments give vibrant color to it’s Momoyama style architecture is designated as a national treasure. At the Hachimangu along the road approaching the shrine, locals still to this day use it as a place to celebrate marriage, coming of age, children's festivals, Hatsumode (first visit to the shrine in the new year) and local festival. Rairaikyo Gorge, located in the Akiu Onsen area of Miyagi Prefecture, is truly a magical setting with the majestic Natori River flowing downstream. However, it is the “Lover’s Sanctuary” location that makes this a must-see destination. From the Nozokibashi Bridge visitors can gaze upon the heart-shaped imprint left by nature along the canyon wall. With beliefs of prosperity falling upon couples that look at the imprint, this is a romantic setting like no other. If you are visiting Akiu Onsen, make sure to go for a walk and enjoy the scenery of Rairaikyo Gorge.
4Akiu Otaki Falls
Akiu Otaki Falls is a natural gem within the Akiu area of Sendai. Once walking through the torii gates, you will find yourself entering what seems like another world. From the crisp mountain air to lush greenery, visitors will be able to take in the beautiful nature of Japan. After a short hike visitors will find themselves gazing upon the 55-meter waterfall. A destination best suited for those nature lovers or simply those who are looking to get away from city life.
