  1. 1
    Mangrove Park

Mangrove Park rests in Sumiyo village, about 90% of which is covered by deep forest. It is home to protected species, and the mangrove forest that spreads out from the estuary at Sumiyo Bay is composed of two types of plants. The scope of the forest is the second largest in Japan next to Okinawa Prefecture's Iriomotejima Island. The valuable fish ryukyuayu that is said to be extinct in Okinawa still inhabits this area, and at low tide crabs moving in large groups can also be seen. Inside the park there are an abundance of courses that will ensure a fulfilling trip to Amami, including ground golf, canoeing, and segway tours with a local guide. At the restaurants, make sure to taste yellowfin tuna caught daily in the nearby ocean, tuna and rice don dishes made with homemade sauce, and local chicken dish keihan.

  2. 2
    Marine Viewer Seto

From aboard the Marine Viewer Seto semi-submerged sightseeing boats, passengers can see the Oshima Strait coral reef that spreads out over the southern part of Amami Oshima Island and tropical fish right before their eyes from the underwater observation rooms. Depending on the weather and the sea conditions each day, there are three courses to choose from, each about 35 minutes round trip (currently, two of the courses have suspended operations). There are two types of ships, red and blue, designed after whales, and from the deck passengers can look out at the blue ocean scenery. From the submerged observation room, passengers can take a peek into the colorful and mysterious world under the sea. Take a ride on the Marine Viewer Seto and have a taste of the extraordinary. *Depending on the weather and the conditions of the sea, departure times may change. *The number of passengers for each boat is fixed. Once that number is reached, reception will finish. Calling ahead of time to reserve a spot is recommended.

    Honohoshi Kaigan Beach

Honohoshi Kaigan Beach is a gravel beach running along the southernmost tip of Amami Oshima Island. It's a strange beach where, when the waves roll in and out, rocks smash together making a sound like drums. It's also known as a power spot. The waves here are rough, so the beach is not good for swimming. However, the area is filled with round stones, and there are also caves and beautifully maintained open spaces, making it a great spot to stop and stretch your legs during a drive. The stones cut into round shapes by the waves are beautiful, and you might want to take some home as souvenirs, but please note that taking any pebbles from the shore out of the beach is not allowed.
