1Kushirogawa River Canoe Touring Lakeside Toro
At the Kushirogawa River Canoe Touring of Lakeside Toro, the most popular of the Kushiro Shitsugen Wetlands canoeing experiences is canoeing with a guide. Because the canoes used on these tours are large, they don't sway very much, so it's easy for small children and the elderly to participate. The tour is an approximately 5.6mi (9km) course that departs from Toroko Lake in the Kushiro Shitsugen Wetlands and passes through tributaries and the main stream, extending all the way to Hosooka. The course is full of nature that can only be accessed by canoe, and it's sure to be a fully enjoyable experience. Different scenery can be enjoyed in each of the four seasons, and with a little luck, visitors might also have the chance to see rare wild animals, such as red-crowned cranes or white-tailed eagles. *Tours are by reservation only.
2Hosooka Observation Deck
The Hosooka Observation Deck offers a panoramic view of the entirety of the Kushiro Shitsugen Wetlands, which is the largest wetland area in all of Japan. On sunny days, visitors will have an unbroken view of the meandering Kushirogawa River and the Akan mountain range that stands towering over the surroundings, and the evening sun sinking behind the mountains is not a sight to miss. The adjacent Hosooka Visitors' Lounge is a rest space, and food and drinks are also available. Photos of flowers and the scenery of the wetlands are on display here as well, creating an environment easy to relax in. Stop by to experience the magnificent nature unique to the Kushiro Shitsugen Wetlands where artificial structures are out of sight.
3Onnenai Boardwalk (Onnenai Visitor Center)
Visitors to the Onnenai Boardwalk can enjoy viewing the plants of the nearby Kushiro Shitsugen Wetlands while taking a stroll along a designated walking trail. The barrier-free boardwalk extends for about 1.2 miles with its starting points at the Onnenai Visitor Center, which includes a rest space and a station with information about the wetlands. Around the boardwalk, there are a variety of seasonal flowers, wild birds, and deer, and in July and August heike-botaru fireflies can be seen as well. In addition, cross-country skiing can be enjoyed here during winter.
