Things to know

The Onomichi Lantern Festival is a paper lantern festival held during October in Onomichi, Hiroshima. For this festival, around 30,000 paper lanterns are placed all over the city, including on the lawn in front of Onomichi Station and along the paths leading up to temples. Originally a port town, the glow of the lanterns is meant to be reminiscent of the lights of cargo ships during the Edo period. Now, most of the lanterns are decorated by local children, depicting their dreams and wishes for the future as well as pictures, messages, and calligraphy. With free live music and warm autumn air, a view of these lanterns is a great way to relax for an evening.
