Things to know

The Eiheiji Daitoro Nagashi Lantern Festival in Fukui Prefecture is said to be the largest river lantern festival in Japan, attracting around 30,000 visitors from all over the country each year. During the festival, over 10,000 candle-lit paper lanterns are released into the Kuzuryugawa River. There are two types of lanterns: one is meant as a memorial for deceased loved ones, and the other is for making wishes. The gentle glow of the lanterns accompanied by the bright flashes of the fireworks display is a summer sight you won’t want to miss.
