Things to know

The Kishiwada Danjiri Festival is one of the most famous danjiri festivals in the country. The main event of the festival is the parade, at which massive wooden danjiri floats crafted by local carpenters are pulled through the streets by hand. Not only are the four-ton floats pulled by people, there are also performers riding on top of the floats, which are usually several meters tall. This is an honorary position, but it is also quite dangerous―it’s extremely difficult to maneuver the floats through the streets, and the person riding on top will also be performing an acrobatic fan dance, so accidents are not uncommon. The festival has a history of over 300 years, however, and the craftsmanship of the floats is decidedly impressive, so anyone who wants a unique cultural experience should make sure not to miss out.
