Things to know

The Nishimonai Bon Odori festival is one of Japan's three largest "Bon Odori" (folk dance) festivals. Nishimonai Bon Odori is a gracefully elegant folk dance and the town of Ugo in Akita prefecture where the festival is held has had a long and rich history of conducting the traditional dance that is associated with the festival. Where there had once been a harvest dance associated with the village, roughly 700 years ago, this was incorporated into the present day Nishimonai Bon Odori dance which pays respect to deceased relatives. With a large number of traditional Japanese instruments used during the festival also, this festival offers many opportunities to learn about Japanese culture.
