Things to know

The Nishimonai Bon Odori Festival is one of Japan’s three largest bon odori folk dance festivals. The modern Nishimonai Bon Odori dance is done to pay respect to deceased relatives, but some of its elements are said to have originated from a harvest dance that was done in Ugo, Akita Prefecture, around 700 years ago. The dance is accompanied by music played on a number of traditional instruments, including taiko drums of various sizes, hand gongs, wooden flutes, and shamisen. Between the dance, the music, and the traditional dress unique to this festival, there are plenty of opportunities to learn about Japanese culture.
