	Things to know The Summer Candle Night is an annual event at Karuizawa Kogen Church in Nagano Prefecture that attracts many visitors staying in the resort town. The event was inspired by Christian missionaries who walked the town of Karuizawa in the past with lanterns, praying for the happiness of citizens. Ever since the Taisho period (1912-1926), the church has held the candle night to continue the tradition of praying for people's happiness. Candle lanterns are placed all throughout the church and its verdant grounds, creating a spiritual and romantic atmosphere. On some nights, there are special performances, such as by a choir.
