Gotokuji Temple is a Buddhist temple in Tokyo, Japan. It is famous for its lucky cat statues or Maneki Neko in Japanese. Legend has it that a feudal lord in the Edo period (1600-1867) was beckoned into the temple by a cat. Thanks to his decision to follow the cat he was spared by the thunderstorm shortly after. Today, the Maneki Neko cat is famous as a charm of good luck throughout the world.
