Hikonejo Castle in Shiga Prefecture is considered one of Japan’s national treasures, alongside a hand-full of other castles. Dating back to the 16th century, the castle includes many important cultural properties.The castle keep, guard houses, and moat are all well preserved, even by Japanese standards. As a castle which managed to avoid destruction since its time of construction, it is historically invaluable which warrants its high national treasure status. A rarity in Japan, fans of history will love Hikonejo Castle.
