Karuizawa Wild Bird Sanctuary

Beautiful Scenery Outdoor Activities
Family-friendly

Established in 1974, the Karuizawa Wild Bird Sanctuary is home to around eighty different species of birds. Located in Nagano Prefecture, this wild bird sanctuary sits on about 100 hectares of forestland. The sanctuary offers around three kilometers of paths visitors can trek on their own while observing all the wildlife, some of which is rare, including various types of butterflies. There are also Japanese-language tours offered for a fee by the Picchio Visitors’ Center. Overall, a great destination to consider for those looking to explore Japanese wildlife. Note that some wild Japanese black bears live in the forest of Karuizawa. During the season from April to November visitors are recommended to use a bell to keep the shy creatures away (rental available) and avoid walks in the early morning or at night.
