Kawabata Street is an entertainment district along the Asahikawa River in Akita City, just a 15-minute walk from Akita Station. The area has been flourishing with Japanese-style restaurants since 1885, and there are over 700 food and drink shops on the street, each offering different kinds of local Akita cuisine and sake rice wine. Some of the most popular regional dishes include kiritanpo, handmade udon noodles, and smoked and pickled vegetables, but there are also a number of general Japanese dishes such as yakitori grilled chicken and fresh seafood available. With a plethora of delights to try, foodies and sake-lovers visiting Akita should make sure to include Kawabata Street in their itineraries.
