The Kyoto National Museum is a major historical art museum in the Higashiyama area of Kyoto, close to the Sanjusangendo Temple. It consists of two main buildings, a historical red-brick building in European style that was built in the Meiji period (1868-1912) and a modern one designed Taniguchi Yoshio. The modern part houses the permanent collection of Japanese art whereas the historical building houses temporary exhibits.
