Mt. Tsukuba, standing at 877 meters (2,877 feet) tall, is a popular hiking spot in Ibaraki Prefecture. Only a short trip from Tokyo, the mountain is also known as the Purple Peak due to the purple glow on the surface of the mountain from the morning and evening sun. There are a number of different hiking trails that vary in length and difficulty, and they each boast their own unique views and characteristics. The view from the top is spectacular, and the cool, crisp air and gentle breezes at the summit are a welcome respite from the summer heat. When making the climb up, however, make sure to bring sunblock, insect repellent, a good pair of sneakers or boots, and lots of water.
