Senkoji Temple (Osaka)

History
Free Admission

Senkoji Temple is one of the oldest Buddhist temples of Osaka alongside the Shitennoji temple. According to legends, its origins date back to the reign of prince Shotoku Taishi, about 1400 years ago. The prince is said to have placed an image of the medicine Buddha, Yakushi Nyorai, in the area where the temple now stands. The main temple structure was burned down in the 17th century and rebuilt. The temple attracts visitors for its recreation of the Buddhist hell and heaven in separate rooms that allow you to get a glimpse of what the states of being might be like.
