Sumiyoshi Taisha Shrine is a major Shinto shrine in southern Osaka. It is one of the oldest shrines in the country, dating back to the third century. It is well-known for its distinct architectural style which is said not to have been influenced by any other Asian cultures from the continent, unlike Buddhist temples and other Shinto shrines that were built in later centuries. Sumiyoshi shrines throughout Japan protect travelers, sailors, and fishermen, and Osaka Sumiyoshi Taisha is the most significant of them. It draws huge crowds for hatsumode, the first shrine visits of the new year in January.

Shinsekai is a local area in Osaka near Tennoji known for its nostalgic flair. It began to be built in the early 20th century, being influenced by major Western cities. However, the product is quite unlike its European and American models. Today, it is mostly known as quirky and seedy area with good local food. It is particularly famous for kushikatsu or fried skewers. It is also home to Spa World, a large bathhouse. Shinsekai and its vicinity is considered less safe according to Japan's high standards, not least because of its red light district and drinking establishments.

Sennichi Doguyasuji Shopping Street in Osaka is a top destination for buying tools and household goods, kitchenware and more. It is also called Kitchenware Street by the operator of the mall. Many of Osaka's chefs buy their tools here, especially if you can't find the right tool anywhere else. It might be worth trying your luck here if you're looking for an extremely specific cooking implement. Even if you are not interested in buying any utensils, the local food and experiences offered in the street may be of interest to you. This includes learning how to make takoyaki octopus balls, a local speciality or how to decorate paper lanterns. Many of the activities are kids friendly.

Tsutenkaku is a steel tower in the nostalgic Shinsekai area of Osaka, not far from Tennoji. Despite its height of 328ft (100m) being easily outranked by more recent buildings, it is still well-known as a symbol of Osaka's modern history. Its origins go back to the early 20th century, but it was refashioned into the current structure after World War Two. It was designed by the same architect as Tokyo Tower and shares the Paris Eiffel Tower as its inspiration.
