Eikando Temple is a Buddhist temple in Kyoto that is famous for its beautiful autumn colors in fall. It is located along the Philosopher's Path that leads up to Ginkakuji Temple. Most people visit Eikando for its beautiful gardens and trees. However, it also features some historical treasures and interesting architecture. One interesting detail of the temple is its unusual Amida Buddha statue whose head is turned to the side as though it were speaking to someone. The temple is also known under its historical name Zenrinji. The name Eikando or Eikan Hall refers to the Buddhist priest Eikan who served as head priest of the temple and is said to have acquired the Amida statue.

Eikando Temple is a great place for the red leaf hunting. I visited there on the weekend at the end of October. It was very crowded. I arrived around 9 a.m. and lots of people were queuing. It took about 20mins to enter the temple. But it was worthwhile and the red leaves along the street where people lining up were quite beautiful. Climbing the Pagoda in the east of the Temple, you can see part of Kyoto’s panorama decorated by the red leaf nearby. The courtyard was filled with red leaves and ginkgo leaves. And there was a resting place selling tea and snacks near the Hojo-ike pond. Part of the temple is opened so visitors can walk along the wooden corridors to get closer to the traditional Buddhist temple. The red leaf viewing at night in this spot is also popular. And the admission fee is 1,000yen, higher than daytime.
