Jigokudani Monkey Park is famous for being one of the only hot springs (onsen) in the world where monkeys take a bath. The park is located in the north of Nagano Prefecture, in a gorge of the Yokuyo River. At a height of 850m, the area is covered in snow for almost one third of the year. Steep cliffs and the steam coming from the hot springs have earned the place the name “Jigokudani” or hell valley.
