The Kumano Nachi Taisha Shrine is devoted to the Nachi Waterfall. It is one of the shrines that conveys the essence of nature worship in Kumano which has existed here since the ancient past. It is one of the three Kumano shrines on the Kumano Kodo route and draws pilgrims for the beauty of its natural scenery. In the vicinity of the shrine, there are also a number of Buddhist temples. The pagoda of Seigantoji temple with the backdrop of the waterfall is a popular photo motif. The proximity of these religious sites exemplifies how different philosophical and religious systems have co-developed and co-existed throughout Japanese history.
