Mt. Moriyoshi in Kitaakita City is one of three places you can see 'snow monsters' in Japan. These apparitions that appear in the snowy mountains of Tohoku in winter are caused by drops of water carried by strong seasonal winds from the Japan Sea, which collide with the tree leaves and freeze over. Mt. Moriyoshi is the perfect spot to enjoy the silver white scenery created by these frost-covered trees. The snow monsters are viewable from the mountaintop gondola station; being able to see them five minutes’ walk from the station is one of the charms of Mt. Moriyoshi. Another one of Mt. Moriyoshi’s charms is the opportunity to experience the wonder of glade skiing as you weave through the ice monsters and silver frost. The ice monsters are typically viewable from mid-January to early March. Definitely experience the splendor of this great nature at least once.
