Oyamazumi Jinja Shrine is a Shinto shrine on Omishima island in the Seto Inland Sea. It is great location to visit if you are traveling on the Shimanami Kaido route. There are numerous Oyamazumi shrines throughout Japan but this one on Omishima in Ehime Prefecture is the head shrine. The deity that is enshrined here has been worshipped since ancient times by warriors and statesmen who prayed for success in battle. This reportedly includes the Meiji-period statesman Ito Hirofumi (1841-1909). Even today, leaders of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Forces are said to visit the shrine on occasion.
