The Kitakanegasawa ginkgo is an old tree from the Kamakura period that is more than 1,000 years old. It is the largest gingko tree in Japan with a height of 31m and a trunk circumference of 22m; It is believed to be the third largest in the country even when grouped with other tree species. The Kitakanegasawa ginkgo is a nationally designated natural monument, and it is also called the “Mother Ginkgo” because of its drooping aerial roots. It is said that lactation will improve if a breastfeeding woman touches it.

If it is an average year, the leaves are green with yellow when seen close by. In mid-November, when seen from farther away, they appear lemony yellow. From late November to early December, the red color becomes darker and then turns orange. If you come to see it too late, it will be difficult because snow will have accumulated, so we recommend coming around mid-November. In addition, a big ginkgo light-up event called the “Big Yellow” is held from mid- to late November every year, so please visit at that time, too!

*Depending on weather conditions and the state of the ginkgo leaves, the timing of the event may change, so please check in advance.
